Bitchin' Bikes in Sanlitun from THE drive-thru

Beer, bikes and herbs (the kind you cook with). This combination makes for quite a unique store. That's what Brick and Cici were thinking when they opened THE drive-thru in Sanlitun SOHO. Now, I have been known to frequent THE drive-thru as a beer patron however for the past couple of weeks Brick has been working on a special bicycle project for me.

Over the past year, the bike paths in Beijing have seemed to transform from a slow path of old, rusty bicycles with broken brakes to a motorway of bright colored bikes with no brakes. While the fixed gear trend probably isn't for me, I did decide to ditch my store-bought bike for something a little more bitchin'.

Enter Brick at THE drive-thru. I paid Brick a visit and we discussed components, sizes, styles, colors and cost. We set a budget and then his creativity and ability to track down parts went to work. The result: a sick bike constructed mostly of carbon fiber and a thrilled customer (see photos). I should also note that Brick will work with most any budget and idea that the customer has. THE drive-thru also stocks bike gear like Bern helmets, Crumpler messenger bags and soon they will have Scullcandy headphones and Abus bike locks.

Wudaokou's Best Desserts

Wudaokou. To some this is a far off land in the NW of Beijing that's only accessible by the outer ring roads (4th and 5th) or the Badaling Expressway. It's considered to be student territory as it houses many of the capital's universities. It's known for cheap drink specials, beer pong, smoke-filled clubs and anything else associated with a college town. I don't think it's on anyone's list of places to go for good food, especially desserts, however for those of us who live in Wudaokou we know there are a few tasty treats that stand out. Here are a few of Wudaokou's best desserts.

This past weekend Great Leap Brewing opened up their new brewpub for a few soft-opening events. The brewpub, located just to the west of the Holiday Inn on Chun Xiu Lu, covers more than 500 square meters with indoor and outdoor seating to accommodate around 200 people. The look and feel of the brewpub is awesome! The glass back wall proudly displays the fermenting tanks giving it the true brewpub feel. The beer movement is alive and well in Beijing! The 2nd Annual Beijing Craft Beer Festival will take place on June 21 and 22 at the Galaxy SOHO. The previous year's event was located in a hard-to-find hutong around Qian'men however this year's event will run 2 days in a much better location. The event will run 5-11pm on Friday, June 21 and 12-11pm on Saturday, June 22. This year promises to have more local entries than last year, including the two local craft breweries listed above.
